Is Attitude Everything?

2009 July 5

According to Wiki… An attitude is a hypothetical construct that represents an individual’s degree of like or dislike for an item. Attitudes are generally positive or negative views of a person, place, thing, or event.

In other words… Attitudes are judgments.

They are something that we get to chose.

So let me ask you… Are your attitudes serving you?

What I mean is… Are you choosing empowering attitudes or dis-empowering attitudes?

A quote from modern day business philosopher Jim Rohn says -

“It’s not what happens to you that determines how your life turns out. What happens to you happens to everyone. It’s your attitude about what happens that is the major determining factor on how your life turns out.”

Do you agree?

There have been many times when things are not necessarily working out the way I would like them to… And I catch myself slipping in the attitude department…

It’s in that awareness that I am able to say “Wait a second… I am reacting negatively instead of  ‘acting’ positively and it is up to me to change my thinking here.”

What I then need to do is ask empowering questions or make empowering affirmation type statements.

Things like:

Everything happens for a reason…

What am I suppose to learn from this situation?

Patience is a Virtue

This is all part of the growing process…

Hopefully you get the idea and see that by doing these small simple things you can reroute your attitude and be in control of how you feel about a given situation or thing.

This keeps you a positive, open minded attitude and ‘curbs’ the “Emotional Hijacking” that could otherwise occur.

Take this great story/poem I came across recently on Attitude…

There once was a woman who woke up one morning,
looked in the mirror,
and noticed she had only three hairs on her head.
‘Well,’ she said, ‘I think I’ll braid my hair today.

So she did and she had a wonderful day.

The next day she woke up,
and looked in the mirror
and saw that she had only two hairs on her head.
‘H-M-M,’ she said.
‘I think I’ll part my hair down the middle today.’
So she did and she had a grand day.

The next day she woke up,
looked in the mirror and noticed
that she had only one hair on her head.
‘Well,’ she said, ‘today I’m going
to wear my hair in a pony tail.’
So she did, and she had a fun, fun day.

The next day she woke up,
looked in the mirror and noticed
that there wasn’t a single hair on her head.
‘YAY!’ she exclaimed.
‘I don’t have to fix my hair today!’

So Yes… Attitude is everything.

Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

Live simply,

Love generously,

Care deeply,

Speak kindly…….

Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass…

It’s about learning to dance in the rain.
